As build up to the 2019 general elections continues, the Akwa Ibom
State Governor, Deacon Udom Gabriel Emmanuel has declared a
political war with President Muhammadu Buhari with an order for
the demolition of a building housing the State campaign office of
the President.
One of the leading socio-political groups in the country, National
Committee for Buhari Support Groups (NCBGS), a central
coordinating organisation for all groups drumming support for
President Buhari’s second term in office officially commissioned
its Akwa Ibom State Secretariat in Uyo last Tuesday with a large
turn-out of members to declare their support for the Nigeria’s
President.
During the commissioning, members of the Peoples Democratic
Party, PDP in Akwa Ibom were reportedly not comfortable with the
said crowd turning up for the said commissioning, thereby raising
unnecessary argument that Barracks Road, which is the location
of the group secretariat as well as the road that leads to
Government House were blocked, creating room for insecurity.
Barely 48 hours after the commissioning of the campaign office,
authorities of the Uyo Capital City Development Authority, UCCDA
visited the building where they reportedly marked its fence for
demolition. Sources say that the order came from the State
Governor, Deacon Udom Emmanuel, even after being told that the
said building has been there even before the creation of the state.
According to the source who did not want his name mentioned told
our reporter that the Akwa Ibom State Governor had early this year
began a campaign of calumny where he reportedly warned
landlords within the state capital not to rent out any of their
apartments to the opposition parties, with particular reference to
the All Progressives Congress, APC. He also warned owners of
billboards not to rent out any of their spaces to the opposition as
well.
The source also hinted that when the news that a certain landlord
along Baracks road had rented its building to the APC, the governor
became furious, threatening the said landlord that his building will
be demolished. The source further said that the governor
immediately ordered the UCCDA to mark the said building for
demolition, which our reporter confirmed that the said building has
since been marked by the authorities of UCCDA for demolition on
the order of the governor.
Meanwhile, our reporter gathered that several politicians in the
past had their political campaign offices located along the same
Barracks road and no one complained of any security breach.
Governor Udom Emmanuel on several occasions held a political
gathering at the round-about, which is just few meters away from
the Government House. We also gathered that the DAKAADA
office, which is one of the campaign offices of the governor is
located along the same Barracks road, and very close to the
Government House than the said building carrying the posters of
President Buhari.
Our reporter also gathered that the fight is targeted at President
Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress, APC as a
way of making sure that no section of the capital city carries any
poster or banner belonging to APC.
