Commissioner laments scarcity of Yoruba teachers

By Kofoworola Belo-Osagie

Lagos State Education Commissioner, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo has lamented the scarcity of Yoruba language teachers and other subjects.

She spoke at the presentation of three Yoruba early grade books at the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB), Maryland on Tuesday which aroused fervent passion for the preservation of Yoruba language among top government functionaries at the event.

The USAID funded the development of the books, Je Ka Kawe 1-3 (and its Igbo and Hausa versions, Ka anyi guo! and Mu Karanta!), with the objective of improving reading skills of lower primary pupils in their mother tongue to boost literacy across Nigerian schools.

Mrs. Adefisayo lamented that Yoruba may go extinct if nothing was done to preserve it – giving the state’s difficulty in hiring teachers of the language for its public schools as an example.

“As for hiring Yoruba teachers, there is a massive problem.  We have been hiring teachers for a while; but do you know there are some subjects we have some serious difficulty with? Yoruba is one of them; Geography is one of them.  History is one of them,” she said.

The Commissioner urged parents to speak Yoruba to their wards at home, while schools should reinforce the learning.  She said she spoke Yoruba to her children growing up and they thank her for it today.

Other officials at the event also underscored the value of using the Yoruba language in school.

Prof. Solomon Makinde, one of the academics that worked on the project, said the books would ease implementation of the National Policy on Education which stipulates that children be educated in their local languages for the first three years of primary school.

“The development of Je Ka Kawe is premised on the language provisions in the National Policy on Education that the mother tongue or the language of the immediate community should be the medium of instruction at the lower primary level of education.

“Looking at the content of the materials, it must be noted that for every class (P1-3) we have the pupils’ book and the teachers’ guide.  The teachers’ guide was written in such a way that the implementing teacher does not need to write a lesson plan for him to teach any of the lessons,” he said.

SUBEB Chairman, Mr. Wahab Alawiye-King said there was no reason to allow the language go extinct.  He said in addition to books, there have always been Yoruba songs and poems that teach morals and health values – all useful for helping groom responsible citizens.

“We are slowly losing our mother tongue.  In order for us to enhance learning and teaching our tongues in our classrooms, we must go back to the basics. I remember writers used mother language to promote moral uprightness.  They use writings in mother language to promote hygiene, cleanliness and things like that. Songs and poems such as “ise ni ogun isee, mura si ise ore mi” – those are the things that remain with us that have guided us to do most of the things we are doing today,” he said.

Chief of Party, Northern Education Initiative Plus, USAID, Mr. Nurudeen Lawal, said Nigeria ranked low in reading standard internationally. He said the local language books project could help address the reading deficiency in Nigeria – giving the success of Ma Karanta! piloted in Bauchi and Sokoto.

“Our early grade reading assessment is so poor.  Even the teachers’ assessment is so poor.  And we need to solve those problems.  When children can read, they have the foundation for life-long learning,” he said.

LASUBEB Board member, Mrs. Sherifat Adedoyin lauded the books as she gave testimony on how she was able to help a pupil learn literacy teaching in Yoruba language.

Director General, Office of Education Quality Assurance, Mrs. Abiola Seriki-Ayeni, said though born outside Nigeria, she learnt to speak Yoruba. Urging parents not to neglect the language, she added that Yoruba is taught abroad.

“This Yoruba language is taught abroad – in Harvard University.  When I was there, I even took a class to believe it,” she said.

Representative of the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja, Mrs. Chinyere Nwokorie, urged the Lagos State government to print more copies of the books so they can go round all schools in Lagos State.

Why I Dumped APC After Serving As Adamawa Commissioner – Atiku’s Daughter

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s daughter, Fatima, has denied revalidating her membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Fatima urged members of the public to discountenance an APC membership revalidation slip in circulation bearing her photo. She said mischief makers were behind circulation of the slip as she never renewed her membership of the party.

The former vice president’s daughter explained that she only joined the APC in 2015 because it was a requirement for her to take up an appointment as Commissioner of Health in Adamawa State.

She said having served out her term, she had no reason to remain in the party as she never wanted to be affiliated to a political party.

Since the conclusion of my duty tour as Commissioner, I am now into private practice, with no affiliation to any political party.

Fatima said, “Since the conclusion of my duty tour as Commissioner, I am now into private practice, with no affiliation to any political party.

“I was, however, taken aback to read of my purported revalidation of APC membership.

“For the avoidance of doubt, I did not revalidate any membership of APC which was necessitated by my call to service in 2015.

“Indeed, I have been in Abuja, never travelled to Jada where the purported revalidation was said to have taken place and never filled a form nor signed any document. The signature appended to the document in circulation is not my signature,” she said.

Fatima’s dissociation of herself from the APC would not come as a surprise to many, as her father who once belonged to the APC had dumped the party ahead of the 2019 general elections.

Atiku had returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to contest against President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 presidential election, but lost to the incumbent.

● Covid-19 : ‘No Vaccine Is 100% Safe’ – Enugu Commissioner

The commissioner for well being, Enugu State, Dr Emmanuel Ikechukwu Obi, Thursday, described insinuations that Covid-19 vaccines being anticipated in Nigeria are faux as the handiwork of conspiracy theorists, including that fears about the vaccine had been unfounded.

Dr Obi, in an unique chat with Nairalovers, mentioned, “The thought of compromising vaccines is not new. In the previous, many individuals have introduced out this kind of details about vaccines. In this world, there are always a nay sayers and sure sayers. There are individuals, who for one purpose or the different, wish to destroy improvements or communicate in opposition to nice strides that individuals are making.

“We have all witnessed how the pandemic is ravaging the world. When we talk about vaccines, it is the solution to protect people against the pandemic. I wonder why people would go the way of trying to speak against the potency of vaccines that would be sent to Africa. We must continue to have conspiracy theorists. There has never been a vaccine that is 100 percent safe. Speaking as a scientist, a lot of things in medicine has come as a result of empirical actions. When things have been looked at empirically, people should accept them with open minds. If we receive adulterated vaccines in Africa, such could trigger new variants of diseases that could threaten the entire world. If somebody wants to bring an adulterated vaccine to Africa, the person’s intention is to destroy the whole world. I don’t think there is any plan towards that. You condemn Covid-19 vaccines, and ironically we are winning the war against yellow fever in Enugu State with yellow fever vaccines. People should not propagate such. Central to the production of the Pfizer vaccine produced in the US is an Igbo man, Dr Ogbuagu. So how would he be a part of that?”

On the efforts to comprise the yellow fever that was just lately skilled in the state, Dr Obi mentioned, “The response to the yellow fever was intense. All partners and stakeholders came together. It affected ten local government areas; and reactive mass vaccination had taken place in those LGAs. Our target is 95% coverage, and within the first week, we pressed on. I can confidently say that we have achieved the 95% vaccination coverage. Surveillance is not ending. We are keeping our eyes open to see if pockets of the disease will rear their head again. We are targeting to vaccinate the entire state to ensure that the disease is chased out.”

By Olawale Ayeni, Abuja

Musa, mentioned Team Kogi’s athletes are totally getting ready for the Nigerian Olympic Games, stating that the workforce would not be going for jamboree however to compete for all out there medals.

“Camping will resume for the Kogi State’s athletes next week, we are doing all our best to make sure that the athletes and officials are well motivated ahead of the National Sports Festival,” Musa mentioned.

How Bello is fighting COVID-19 in Kogi, by commissioner

How Bello is fighting COVID-19 in Kogi, by commissioner

Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications Kingsley Fanwo spoke with reporters in Lagos on efforts by Governor Yahaya Bello to fight insecurity, COVID-19 pandemic and enhance funding drive. EMMANUEL OLADESU reviews.

Since assuming workplace for a second time period, how has Governor Yahaya Bello justified the boldness reposed in him by the folks of the state?

Just like his marketing campaign programme ‘Doing More’, he is doing extra for the great folks of the state. Recently, a great variety of tractors and different farming gear had been procured by the State Government and distributed to all of the native authorities areas for enormous agricultural manufacturing.  Immediately he took his oath of workplace on the twenty seventh of January 2020, only a few months after COVID-19 began, which has change into a giant concern affecting a number of economies around the globe. But, we’re looking for methods spherical it by guaranteeing that we enhance agricultural manufacturing in the state as a lot as we will. Also, highway initiatives are ongoing in the state. In the following couple of weeks, the favored Ganaja Flyover is going to be flagged off in order that work can start in earnest. Also, the Kabba Township highway is only a few weeks away from being flagged off. The excellent news about that individual highway is that the fund for it is out there already.  The solely factor is simply to mobilise the contractors to maneuver to web site and begin development. So, a number of issues are at the moment happening in the state. Within the second time period additionally, he has fulfilled the duty of guaranteeing grassroots participation in governance by conducting a really free and honest native authorities election that was vastly profitable. One historic factor in regards to the election was that the {party} fielded ladies as vice-chairmanship candidates they usually all emerged as elected vice-chairmen in the state. Also, 35 % of the councilors are additionally younger women and girls.  Also, every of the 21 legislative councils is being led by a lady in the state. So, the governor has performed quite a bit and that is why the National Council of Women in Nigeria try to present him a really particular award very quickly in the following few days to honour him for what he has performed  for the womenfolk in the state.  So, he is doing quite a bit in all of the sectors of the economic system, youth empowerment, agriculture, infrastructure, healthcare and different areas.  So, I can say he has been justifying the boldness reposed in him by the great folks of Kogi state.

How has the state been fighting COVID-19, particularly now that the second wave is inflicting extra havoc internationally?

We have succeeded in sensitising the great folks of Kogi state. The greatest weapon to combat COVID-19 so far as we’re involved is by means of sensitisation. When the folks know their duties and what they need to do to maintain themselves protected, it is going to assist in guaranteeing that the pandemic doesn’t ravage the state.  We are nonetheless on the truth that there has not been a single case in Kogi state. All these different ones declared by the NCDC are controversial and we have now rejected these figures in clear phrases.   As far as we’re involved, we are going to proceed sensitization. Before some other state, we constructed our communication pillars on COVID-19 and ensured that we’re telling the folks the fitting factor in regards to the virus. That is what is working for the state. We have our cutting-edge isolation centres. We will not be saying COVID-19 doesn’t exist, we’re solely saying that the best way it is being marketed and promoted is unlucky and it is designed to wreck the economic system of the nation if we’re not cautious about it.

Before the governorship election, there have been complaints by some members about disunity in Kogi APC. How united is Kogi APC now?

Those complaining are those that will not be critically on floor to know what was occurring. Under the management of Governor Yahaya Bello, APC has been in good arms. It is not misplaced for people who find themselves not on floor with the {party} members and management, who suppose they will keep in Abuja to complain that there is no cohesion. We had ward, native congresses and state congress, we got here to the nationwide conference. There is no single authorized tussle due to that. It exhibits that our folks have come to just accept the management of the governor. He in flip, is piloting the affairs of the {party} very effectively. We are cohesive and we’re going to work with APC members and leaders to make sure that we ship Kogi state and likewise be part of our compatriots throughout the nation to ship the nation to APC, in order that we will proceed to consolidate on the achievements of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC) in its reviews final December mentioned that Kogi state overtook Lagos in funding circulate in Q3 2020. How had been you in a position to obtain that?

We put in place buildings that might encourage buyers to return into the state; buildings like our tax administration system is such a really pleasant one to buyers.  We had been additionally in a position to banish the ghost of insecurity in the state with the attractive job performed by the governor with Operation Total Freedom. That has been in a position to give confidence to buyers to carry their investments into the state. Also, our huge investments in agriculture have additionally been yielding a number of outcomes.  Unicane is producing billions of naira on yearly foundation. They are in Kogi state and their main uncooked materials is cassava. The funding drive in the state is such a large one due to our insurance policies and commitments to safe and shield the pursuits of our buyers. That was the magic.

What is the state authorities doing in the world of employment for teens?

We seen that a part of the issue which we face in the state, which is additionally a nationwide downside, is the overpopulation of the payrolls of native authorities administrations by individuals who don’t have any enterprise being in the native governments.  Those individuals who had been giving them employment letters thought they had been doing them a favour however they had been really killing the system financially. What we’re doing presently is to spice up agriculture. That is the best way out.  That is one sector that may take hundreds of our youths of the streets.  We are dedicated to doing that. We are additionally doing quite a bit by making a full-fledged ministry for Solid Minerals to have the ability to discover a construction of participating our youths, to have the ability to take part. Also, the federal government is placing in place buildings to have the ability to be a participant as a result of the methods the National Laws are operated in Nigeria is that the mineral assets in your lands are owned by the federal authorities. We need to be a participant; we can not simply hold quiet and say it is owned by the federal authorities once more. We are devising a manner of collaborating. If personal firms might take part, it means states might additionally type company organisations that may additionally take part and reap the benefits of that. We know that is going to take a number of youths off the streets.  We are hopeful that President Buhari is going to meet his promise of guaranteeing that Ajaokuta Steel works earlier than he leaves workplace. That was why we have now determined as a state to strategically place ourselves to feed that business with the college that is going to start educational calendar this yr; that is the Confluence University of Science and Technology  established by the current administration.

Many Nigerians are questioning that why do you may have two state-owned universities in the midst of scarce assets?

The Kogi state University at Ayi gba is a standard one; this is a specialised college which we need to use to feed our industries.  We are going to have Ajaokuta Steel; we have now Iron and Ore at Itakpe; we have now Obajana Cement Company at Obajana. We have various these firms. So, we want engineers that will probably be educated in our establishment and in that atmosphere to have the ability to feed these industries. These are among the issues that we’re doing and we all know that it is going to create a number of job alternatives for our youths.
