Bandits Sponsored By Those Who Wanted Jonathan Out —Mailafia

Bandits Sponsored By Those Who Wanted Jonathan Out —MailafiaDr Obadiah Mailafia

Former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Obadiah Mailafia has expressed that bandits were brought into Nigeria in 2015 by powerful people who wanted former President Goodluck Jonathan out of power.

He made this accusation in an interview with The Punch, on Thursday.

Mailafia expressed that those powerful individuals intended to deploy the bandits for war if Jonathan did not concede the 2015 presidential election.

The former CBN deputy governor also said there should be no amnesty for the bandits because they are only out to destroy.

“During the 2015 elections they brought in thousands of foreigners into this country, armed them because it was a case of if Goodluck Jonathan doesn’t surrender, there will be war. They were ready for civil war; they were not ready for peace,” Mailafia said.

“Of course, Jonathan handed over to them and then they turned their backs on the hoodlums and the hoodlums said ‘look, you brought us here and we are still here’.

“There are certain world powers that want to destroy our country. That is what I believe. There was a container load of weapons that were brought in from Turkey. Another time some were brought in from Iran. But nobody probed further and everything was swept under the carpet and that was the end of it.

“I do not believe that the Niger Delta militancy can be compared to the terrorists. These people (terrorists) are not even bandits. A bandit is a common thief or a brigand. The ‘agbero’ are bandits. These people carrying sophisticated weapons and rockets are not bandits. They are terrorists.

“They have killed, they have maimed, they have raped and they have wreaked havoc.”

Politics should not be war, says Jonathan

By Simon Utebor, Yenagoa

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged politicians to see politics as a means of developing the people and not as warfare.

Jonathan spoke yesterday at the Ecumenical Centre in Igbogene, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, during the first anniversary thanksgiving of the Governor Douye Diri administration.

The thanksgiving was also used to celebrate the February 13, 2020, Supreme Court judgment that ushered in Diri as governor.

Others at the thanksgiving were Dame Patience Jonathan, Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo); Bala Mohammed (Bauchi); Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom); National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Uche Secondus, among others.

The former president stressed that at the end of every political contest, politicians should sheathe their swords and work with the winner.

He praised Diri for his non-discriminatory style of politics, which ‘had seen him embrace everybody regardless of their political leanings’.

Jonathan also called for support from the people to enable the Diri administration to succeed.

He said: “Those of us in politics should learn to play politics as politics and not as a war. At the end of the process, let us come together and support the winner.

“I thank our governor for opening his mind to accept everybody irrespective of the political divide, and I urge him to do more.”

Diri thanked God for the miracle that brought him to office, saying he would forever remain grateful and committed to the service of the state.

The governor also thanked the judiciary, particularly the Supreme Court Justices, for their courage in delivering such a landmark judgment. Diri said the Justices proved that the judiciary remained the last hope of the common man.

He also thanked those who stood by him after the election and before the court ruling, especially Senator Seriake Dickson, Emmanuel and Makinde. According to him, they allowed God to use them to make his dream a reality.

The governor urged the people to always exude love and embrace one another irrespective of party affiliations, stressing that the development of the state was bigger than any group or individual consideration.

He said: “They say the judiciary is the last hope of the common man. For us, the judiciary was our last hope. We thank all those who contributed one way or another toward ensuring our victory.

“I again urge Bayelsans not to see those in the opposition as enemies. Today they are there but tomorrow they might be here. As I speak, many of our brothers in the All Progressives Congress (APC) are returning to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).”

Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo recalled that their hope was dashed but God served them to victory. He said they are grateful to God and the people for their solidarity during the difficult moments that led to the court victory.

In their goodwill messages, Governors Makinde, Emmanuel and Mohammed, and Secondus hailed Diri for his strides in office. They were confident he would transform the state, and urged Bayelsans to support him.

Pastor Lazarus Mouka of The Lord’s Chosen Charismatic Revival Movement delivered a sermon ‘It is the Lord’s Doing’. He described Diri’s emergence as divine.

According to him, there were limitations with man, but with God, all things were possible. He urged the people to turn to God for salvation.

The cleric hailed the governor and people for the attitude of thanksgiving and prayed to God to enable Diri to fulfil his purpose for the state.

Fani-Kayode meets Goodluck Jonathan amid rumours of defecting to APC (PHOTOS)

Femi Fani-Kayode, former Aviation Minister has visited ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

Fani-Kayode and his team met with Jonathan on Wednesday evening in Abuja.

Disclosing this in a tweet, the former minister wrote: “My team and I had the honor and privilege of spending a wonderful evening with President Goodluck Jonathan in his Abuja home last night. None like him.”

This is coming amid rumour over his defection to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Recall that Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State had disclosed that the former minister had dumped the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to APC.

Bello had said the former minister joined the ruling party to add his positive energy.

The PDP chieftain, however, countered Bello’s claim, insisting that he was still a member of Nigeria’s leading opposition party.

Fani- Kayode had met with both Bello and the interim Caretaker Chairman of APC, Mai Mala Buni in Abuja where they had a fruitful discussion on how to move Nigeria forward.

● APC, Jonathan and 2023 rumours

Nairalovers Nigeria

Despite denials by concerned parties, talk about alleged plans by former President Goodluck Jonathan to dump the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), refuse to go away.

The APC leadership had denied that talks are on to field Jonathan in the 2023 presidential election. The former president’s camp has also regularly debunked reports linking him with the move.

But some pundits insist that indications are daily emerging linking Jonathan with APC, especially under the leadership of Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, who is chairman of the party’s caretaker committee.

The latest addition to the tales is that Jonathan will seek the presidential ticket of the APC as part of the deal to get him join the party ahead of the 2023 elections. So rife is the new tale that Buni had to, once again, deny the reports.

He ‘cleared’ the air while leaving a window of opportunity. In an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Hausa Service on Wednesday, he denied APC governors had endorsed Jonathan for 2023. He, however, said it would be a ‘new discussion entirely’ whether Jonathan would be welcome if he eventually indicates interest.

Some observers say this is one denial that’s bound to keep the rumour mills engaged, rather than silence them.

It is better to lose power than lose peace – Jonathan reacts to insurrection at US Capitol

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has reacted to the insurrection initiated by Pro-Trump supporters at the United States Capitol yesterday January 6.

Jonathan in a statement he released, said it is better to lose power at the cost of gaining peace, than to gain power at the price of losing the peace.

He further said it is never too late to reject the venom and inject the serum of peace. The statement read;

“I have repeatedly said nobody’s political ambition is worth the blood of any citizen, in any part of the world. Absolutely nobody.

“Again, I reiterate that it is better to lose power at the cost of gaining peace, than to gain power at the price of losing the peace.

“As a leader, one must not just look unto one’s own interest, but the interest and the good of society.

“It is never too late to reject the venom and inject the serum of peace. It is necessary to state that the highest purpose of leadership is to bring people together, even those that do not share in your philosophy.

“And you do not need an office to do that. All you need to achieve that height of leadership is conscience. Let us be men of conscience at this hour.”
