2023: I Have No Interest In Tinubu’s Presidential Ambition, Says Fayose

Ayo Fayose

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has expressed that he has no interest in the rumoured presidential ambition of All Progressives Congress chieftain, Bola Tinubu, in 2023.

Fayose stated this on a Nairalovers Live interview on Wednesday.

He expressed confidence that his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, would produce Nigeria’s president in the 2023 general elections.

He said “Bola Tinubu is a leader in the West. It is a statement of fact” but noted that he has not met or spoken with the former Lagos State governor in years.

Fayose said, “I have never met former governor Ahmed Bola Tinubu in the last three years and I have never spoken with him on the phone once. So, I don’t how they are tying the relationship politically.

“To the best of my knowledge, I am not a member of APC. I have no influence on how he will become if he wants to become. I have no interest; the only interest I have is that a PDP president must be put in place.”

◊ ‘Peter Obi should contest 2023 presidential election’

Our Reporter

A socio-political organisation, the Movement for the Election of Nigerian President of Igbo Extraction, wants Mr. Peter Obi to contest the 2023 presidential poll.

Obi was the vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019 election.

The group made the call in a statement by its National Convener, Mr Vincent Ezekwueme, at the weekend in Enugu.

According to Ezekwueme, the appeal is based on the national acceptance of Obi due to his prudent management of public funds and selfless service to sectors of the economy, irrespective of state, religion or ethnicity.

The statement said: “Obi, a former governor of Anambra, changed politics from transactional to transformational and attuned himself as a servant-leader to the people.

“It is pertinent to note that Obi is not only honest and transparent, but also humble, selfless and fanatical when it comes to the welfare of the citizenry.

“It is on record that his renovation of schools and hospitals and the empowerment of children, youths and widows stand out in Anambra to date.

“Obi is the person Nigerians need as their president to actualise Nigeria of our dreams, hopes and aspirations.’’  Ezekwueme, however, reiterated his earlier appeal to parties to zone their presidential candidates to the Southeast in the spirit of justice, equity, morality and good conscience.

“It will be in the best interest of the nation to re-enact the 1999 scenario in which the presidency was ceded to the Southwest to pacify the people over the annulment of June 12 presidential election.”

“The June 12 presidential election was clearly won by Chief MKO Abiola of the Social Democratic Party (SDP),” he recalled.

Insecurity: Govs, security chiefs meet in Ibadan as weather halts presidential team’s attendance

Southwest governors and traditional rulers have met to appraise the security situation of the zone.

The meeting was held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Saturday.

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State and Chairman of the Southwest Governors Forum spoke at the end of the meeting.

He said though the parley was at the instance of the presidency, the Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim Gambari, the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu and the Director-General of the Department of State Services could not fly out of Abuja due to bad weather.

A statement by Governor Seyi Makinde’s spokesman, Taiwo Adisa, indicated that Akeredolu read a three-point communique.

“That the meeting supported the decision of the National Economic Council (NEC) on forest management; that the nation’s borders need to be fully secured and protected; that open grazing must be checked and that media practitioners must assist the country to end fake news,” he said.

In attendance were Governors Makinde, Akeredolu, Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti, Gboyega Oyetola of Osun and Dapo Abiodun of Ogun.

Presidential Amnesty office begins probe of fraudulent contractors

The report on capital importation into the country compiled by the Central Bank of Nigeria was released on Friday by the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, with Abia State picking the third place.

Recall that the report captured the total Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), portfolio and other types of investments into the country in a year the global economy suffered a terrible battering as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Recall that by destination, Lagos emerged as the top destination of capital investment in Nigeria with $8.3 billion, followed by the FCT, which received $1.3 billion while Abia State came third with $56 million.

Speaking on this development, the Special Adviser to the Abia State Governor on Social Investment Programme and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Chief Chinenye Nwaogu admitted that the strides recorded by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu in the development of Aba, the commercial nerve center of the state, which revived the business activities in Aba, assisted greatly in the recent feat recorded by the State.

He expressed optimism that the figure will be higher in the year 2021 because of the relentless efforts of the Governor in the promotion of Small and Medium Scale Enterprises and the groundbreaking of Enyimba Economic City this year.

Nwaogu said, “We are happy with the positive result and most importantly, it is coming from a body outside the control of the Abia State Government; so nobody will say that it was rigged. This ranking came out of deliberate and focused activities and efforts of the state government under the leadership of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu.”

Nwaogu who expressed the preparedness of Abia State to sustain the result and do more exploits, further described the result as a reward of focused and dedicated actions of Gov. Ikpeazu, saying, “the result is going to be sustained.”

He pointed out that the mechanism put in place by Governor Ikpeazu immediately after he assumed office as duly elected governor in 2015, positively improved business operating environment in Aba and made it easy for foreign direct investment, local investors and all kinds of business people to come in and out of the state to do business.

Nwaogu pointed out that the infrastructure gap; poor road network and access to funds noticed by Dr. Ikpeazu when he assumed office as the governor were tackled squarely.

He called on both foreign and local investors to come to Aba and invest as Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has put in his best to secure the state, so that investors will have the needed confidence while running their businesses.

2023: APC must be mature in picking presidential candidate – Osun Speaker

The Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Timothy Owoeye has urged the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to be mature in picking its flagbearer for the 2023 presidential election.

Nairalovers reports that Owoeye made this known in a brief remark on Monday while revalidating his membership of the party in Unit 6, Ward 10, Ilesha East Local Government Area of the State.

The lawmaker recalled that the euphoria which greeted the formation of the APC in 2013 was one of hope and greatness for Nigeria.

The Speaker who compared the merger of the ACN, CPC, ANPP and the eventual fusion of the nPDP to that of corporate conglomerates in the business world, reiterated that the coming together was as a result of a series of round table discussions where agreements were made and interests protected.

In his words, “I have studied the undercurrent for the 2023 elections and the position of the National Executives, I charge the party to imbue the spirit of maturity we had in 2013, agree and decide on who the drivers of our vehicle will be.
“We must rejig the euphoria we had in 2013 and strive to ensure that this vehicle (APC) continues on the journey until we reach the destination of making Nigeria an enviable country in the comity of nations.

“The APC is a great party with great plans for this country and its citizens. Have we delivered on our promises? Not really! But we have begun a credible process that we must collectively strive to sustain.”

Owoeye urged his supporters to go out and encourage people to join the APC adding that the party has a chance to bring in a new set of young people with modern ideals in line with global democratic tenets and standards.

● PDP BoT member, Waziri: North must produce the 2023 presidential candidate

A member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) board of trustees (BOT), Adamu Maina Waziri has stated that the party’s presidential ticket will be zoned to the north.

Recall that the main opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was the ruling party for 16 years before President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) defeated former President Goodluck Jonathan during the 2015 presidential election.

Waziri in an interview with DAILY TRUST said Jonathan should not have contested against Buhari in 2015.

He said the agreement was to present a northern presidential candidate in 2015 as a form of filling the void created by the death of former President Umar Musa Yar’adua, who died before the end of his tenure.

The BoT member said the party will return the presidential ticket to the north, saying that is the agreement in place.

“It was based on a written understanding that President Jonathan was going to do one term and fix certain inequities that became visible in the administration of Nigeria,” he said.

“President Jonathan made a commitment and a public statement that he would like to amend the constitution, such that the tenure will be one term, he added.

He said five years or six years was better and would do electoral reform. This was because the system that brought in governments in 2003 and 2009 were disputed by the court and other observers.

“The Electoral Act would be changed and he would have several projects to embark on. But for one reason or the other, President Jonathan reneged, which became the death knell of the PDP in 2015, though, there were other contributory factors and the system was dislocated.

“As far as the PDP is concerned, the presidency should return to the North because the successor to President Jonathan in 2011 should have been a northern candidate, not Jonathan. That is the understanding in the PDP and that is what I subscribe to. We cannot enforce a system on APC neither can the APC enforce a system on PDP.”

Waziri said the PDP intends to return to power in 2023 by winning both presidential and governorship elections.

He discredited rumours that Jonathan was being considered as the presidential candidate of the party in the next election.

The PDP chieftain said the opposition party will adopt caution in the choice of its candidate, saying “the PDP wants to put forward a candidate that can win the presidency”.

“When the time comes, that overriding desire will be a major input into the decision we are going to make. I, as an individual, will be in support that the presidential candidate must be from the North,” he said.

“I want PDP to take over the governance of Nigeria, not only the presidency but the remaining states in 2023; but we must work for it. It is not manna from heaven. Yes, people should work for it and we should have a change.”

● Buhari-Tinubu presidential ticket would have torn Nigeria apart – Fani-Kayode

:
Femi Fani-Kayode, former Minister of Aviation has stated Muslim-Muslim ticket in 2015 between President Muhammadu Buhari and Asiwaju Tinubu would have torn Nigeria apart.

Fani-Kayode stated this whereas reacting to an announcement by former Governor of Osun State, Olagunsoye Oyinlola that Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo was accountable for truncating the Buhari-Tinubu presidential ticket in 2015.

Fani-Kayode in a post on his Twitter web page on Saturday agreed that though Obasanjo spoke towards it, he was the first to blow the whistle towards Muslim-Muslim ticket in 2015.

According to him, his contribution in 2015 was an historic one as a result of a Muslim ticket would have been a deep insult to Christians and would have torn Nigeria apart.

His tweet learn: “Obasanjo spoke towards it however I used to be the first. I blew the whistle earlier than anybody else. Obasanjo spoke solely after I wrote my essay warning about the risks of a Muslim Muslim ticket.

“We must not distort history. I am proud of the role played then and I did it for Nigeria and for my faith. A Muslim Muslim ticket in 2015 would have been a deep insult to Christians and it would have torn Nigeria apart.”

Amanda Gorman set to become youngest poet to recite at a presidential inauguration at 23

Amanda Gorman set to become youngest poet to recite at a presidential inauguration at 23

23-year-old National Youth Poet Laureate, Amanda Gorman, is set to become the sixth American poet to perform at a presidential inauguration and the youngest ever.

Gorman, who was born and raised in Los Angeles and studied sociology at Harvard, became America’s first-ever national youth poet laureate in 2017. She will become the youngest poet to perform at the swearing-in for US President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on January 20.

According to US reports, it was president-elect Joe Biden’s wife, Jill Biden, who recommended her as his inaugural poet. Gorman will be performing on Wednesday January 20, alongside Lady Gaga, who will be singing the American national anthem, and Jennifer Lopez.

Gorman’s poem, The Hill We Climb, will touch on, although not reference directly, last week’s riots in the US Capitol.

She shared a short extract with the New York Times: “We’ve seen a force that would shatter our nation rather than share it, / Would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy. / And this effort very nearly succeeded. / But while democracy can be periodically delayed, / It can never be permanently defeated,” she has written.

“I wasn’t trying to write something in which those events were painted as an irregularity or different from an America that I know,” she told the Los Angeles Times.

“America is messy. It’s still in its early development of all that we can become. And I have to recognise that in the poem. I can’t ignore that or erase it. And so, I crafted an inaugural poem that recognises these scars and these wounds. Hopefully, it will move us toward healing them.”

The theme of Biden’s inauguration is America United, and Gorman told the Associated Press that while she hadn’t been told what to write by organisers, she’d been encouraged to emphasise unity as opposed to “denigrating anyone” or declaring “ding, dong, the witch is dead” over the departure of Donald Trump.

Anyim’s presidential posters flood Ebonyi, social media

Anyim’s presidential posters flood Ebonyi, social media

By Ogochukwu Anioke, Abakaliki

Presidential campaign posters of former Senate President and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Anymi Pius Anyim, have flooded Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, and the social media.

The campaign posters, tagged: Progress 2023, with the picture of Anyim, have gone viral.

The posters are powered by a group, called Nigerians Ask for Anyim, with Facebook and twitter names as piusanyim2023, while www.nigeriaask4anyim.org is its website.

The Nigerians Ask for Anyim 2023 campaign organisation is said to be championed by a former House of Representatives member in the state.

But Anyim on Thursday distanced himself from the campaign posters.

In a personal statement, he said: “My attention has just been drawn to posters and stories circulating in the social media. One of them has the inscription: ‘2023…Anyim Pius Anyim for President’ with my picture on it.

“I want to state very emphatically that I do not have a hand in those posters or campaign and did not authorise any such publications.

“As a law-abiding citizen, I am fully aware that it is not the time for campaigning for 2023 elections.

“The government at the Federal level has spent only a year and seven months out of four-year term, grappling with the issues of governance and so should not be distracted.

“I enjoin the general public to disregard any such posters and publications as they are not from me.”

No cold war between Tinubu and Fayemi over 2023 presidential race: Ex-Ekiti APC chair

From Priscilla Ediare, Ado-Ekiti

The former Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State, Chief Jide Awe, has said the National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Governor Kayode Fayemi, enjoy a good relationship despite their rumoured interests in the 2023 presidential race.

Awe, who advocated for unity in the APC, urged the followers of the two chieftains to promote the overall interests of the party and make it stronger ahead of the future elections.

The former Ekiti APC boss said now is the time to concentrate on building the party rather than causing division to make it a stronger election-winning platform.

Awe, who spoke on Saturday while featuring on a personality interview programme, THE CONVERSATION, on New Cruse 92.7 FM, Ikere, insisted that the APC must use the opportunity of being in power at the centre to restructure the country.

The Erijiyan Ekiti-born politician said politicians across party divides are being carried away by the race for the 2023 presidency when officeholders are yet to reach the midterm because much powers have been concentrated at the centre.

The party chieftain called for the implementation of the Nasir el Rufai-led APC Panel on Restructuring report to douse agitations for the reworking of the organs and structures being operated in the country’s presidential system of government.

He canvassed for a return to regionalism as a basis for the development of the country which he said would not disturb the operations of the presidential system of government.

Responding to a question on the rumoured interest of Tinubu and Fayemi in the APC presidential ticket, ahead of the 2023 general elections, Awe noted that while the two prominent party leaders have not declared their ambition, their supporters have been shouting on their perceived bid from the rooftop.

Awe noted that while the supporters of Tinubu and Fayemi have been firing salvos at one another, the two leaders still maintain their friendship and relate well with each other.

He said: ‘The two protagonists (Tinubu and Fayemi) are yet to speak up but their supporters have been in the vanguard of ambition yet to be declared. We should concentrate on building our party rather than causing division.

‘There is no pseudo war between Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Dr John Kayode Fayemi. Look at you, the next day, you will see Dr Fayemi at Bourdillon (Ikoyi residence of Tinubu).

‘That is politics for you, it is a game of the more you look, the less you see.’

While advocating for stronger institutions, Awe said the restructuring would help build stronger institutions that would further entrench democracy.

‘We should have strong institutions backed up by law and we need strong institutions to back up the Presidency.

‘Much importance has been attached to the Presidency. We have been revolving, let us dismantle this evil; make the Presidency less attractive and let’s lay a foundation.

‘But I doubt if the present National Assembly can do it. The path to the greatness of Nigeria lies in going back to regionalism. I am an advocate of restructuring, let’s go back to the basics and rebuild our country,’ he said.

US Presidential Transition: Samson Agonistes Trump

By Tiko Okoye

PRESIDENT Donald Trump has practically set aside any semblance of governance as he continues to hunker down in the White House – amidst tantrums and meetings with conspiracy theorists pushing him, like the biblical King Rehoboam, to abuse the power of his office.

White House adviser Peter Navarro has urged President Donald Trump to appoint a special prosecutor to smoke out details of how Democrats stole his election victory before inauguration day, in order to stop Biden from taking the oath of office as “an illegal and illegitimate president.”

Steve Banon, who was sacked from his post as senior advisor, was recently seen visiting the White House. He later told the press corps that he “impressed it on the president to immediately appoint special prosecutor for election fraud and voter fraud because they are two different things entirely.”

Two days to the date he was asked to step aside from his post, Attorney-General William Barr gave a rare press interview, where he emphatically stated that the election is very credible and that there is no need to appoint a special prosecutor. Observers believe he was simply trying to provide a basis for his successor, Jeffrey Rosen, to successively resist pressures in this regard from Trump in order to fast-track his confirmation, but would be able to say ‘No’ to a rampaging Trump?

On his own part, Gen. Michael Flynn (ret.), jailed for lying to Congress, and recently pardoned by President Trump, bragged that Trump could use “military capabilities” to grind out a different set of results in the swing states by suspending the Constitution under martial law and deploying military personnel to conduct a fresh election in each battleground state. “People out there talk about martial law like it’s something we’ve never done (before),” he gushed, “(but) martial law has been instituted 64 times!” Really? Fascism being freely bandied about in the hallowed office of a US president? Richard Nixon must be turning in his grave for allowing himself to be shooed out of office just for wiretapping the Watergate Hotel Democrats held their national convention in late 1971!

Flynn’s kite was immediately shot down by the military top brass. Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy and Chief of Army Staff Gen. James McConville issued a joint press statement in which they unequivocally emphasized that, “There is no role for the US military in determining the outcome of an American election.”

White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany revealed on Fox News that there is every likelihood that Congress would decide to ratify the GOP-coordinated “alternate electors” in the swing states, thereby overruling the Electoral College and throwing the election to Trump.

And as if taking his cue from McEnany, Mo Brooks, a Republican member of the House of Representatives from Alabama immediately pledged to object to the counting of electoral college votes when Congress reconvenes on January 6, 2021. All it would take to trigger a vote in both chambers of Congress is the support of one senator. And Tommy Tuberville, a Republican Senator-elect also from Alabama, has publicly declared that he would support Brooks’ motion. While tweeting that Tuberville is “a great champion and man of courage,” Trump asked more senators to join him to overturn the official election result, even as he equally urged hundreds of thousands of his supporters to turn up for a march on Capitol Hill when Congress reconvenes.

But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who only recently acknowledged Biden’s victory, would be hoping that Tuberville and his co-travellers have a change of heart, otherwise the motion would be defeated on the floor; but not before needlessly portraying both the GOP as a divided house and Senate Republicans as being anti-Trump. Trump’s dangerous machinations are raising serious doubts about the future of the Republican Party as the battle for its soul post-2020 promises to be a very bruising one between political survival and dominance.

President Richard Nixon had defiantly clung to his post in the first two years of the Watergate scandal that was tearing the Republican Party and the nation apart. On August 7, 1974, three top GOP leaders in Congress – Sen. Barry Goldwater (AZ), Sen. Hugh Scott (PA) and Rep. John Rhodes (AZ) – paid him a solemn visit at the White House and declared: “Mr. President, it is time for you to exit office in the interest of the nation and the Republican Party.” Nixon announced his resignation the very next day!

Unfortunately, Trump has remade the Republican Party after his own image and turned party leaders into ‘house boys’ on his way to becoming more of a cult leader in the mould of Adolf Hitler. The Republican base is strictly loyal to him and not the party establishment; plus he has a firewall in Congressmen who see more harm to their political careers in opposing him than supporting him, no matter what he says or does. No one was surprised when Trump tweeted a response to McConnell’s congratulatory message to Biden: “Stay with me or there would be no Republican Party”!

Not too long ago, the Trump legal team publicly disowned Sidney Powell after she floated fantastical conspiracy theories linking late Venezuelan Head of State Hugo Chavez, some ‘disloyal’ Republicans and the CIA with ‘malfunctioning’ voting machines – fables that even members of the Trump inner caucus considered too wild! But Trump is reportedly mulling over appointing her a special counsel for voter fraud – recall Navarro’s forewarning on Fox News! He subsequently tried to douse rising tension in the polity after the plot was leaked to the New York Times by tweeting “Martial law = Fake News,” but many attribute his volte-face partly to the leakage and partly to the strong rebuff by the military when the kite was first publicly flown.

Trump still has a joker up his sleeves. The Supreme Court – in a 6-3 split decision along ideological lines – voted to give him a few days’ respite to implement his determination to exclude undocumented immigrants from the 2020 census that would establish the numbers to be used to decide the reapportionment of Representatives among the states as well as the distribution of $1.5 trillion in federal funds.

It is generally believed that the policy is primarily targeted at blue states such as California and New York with extra-large proportions of the popular and Electoral College votes; they stand to lose big time in terms of House seats and federal funding. Still, red states like Arizona, New Mexico, Florida and Texas with relatively high numbers of undocumented immigrants could equally suffer.

Two major factors are providing the oxygen Trump needs to continue to rain on Biden’s parade. The first is the solid support of Evangelicals. Many leading members went the extra mile of prophesying Trump’s election win, and must remain in cahoots with him in his increasingly mindboggling attempts to retain power in order to save themselves from ridicule. The mindless adulation can only be reversed if and when Evangelicals finally realise that the man who pleases God is not the self-righteous ‘talker’ in Luke 18:9-12, but the humble ‘doer’ in Matthew 25:34-40.

The second factor is the docility of the Biden team. The harsh reality of being excluded from the pantheon of second-term presidents – a revered class that includes the likes of Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and George W. Bush that he condescendingly considers as inferior to him, has caused Trump to – as the popular American idiom goes – lose it! Show me a man willing to cut his nose in order to spite his face and I’ll show you a mentally deranged individual.

In every democracy where due process and the rule of law are enthroned, every losing candidate is allowed to have his day in the courts. But the dispute comes to an end whenever the highest court pronounces a judgement. Trump, who still has an opportunity to mark his last days in office with a victory lap vis-à-vis the game-changing Covid-19 vaccines his warp-speed project crystallised, is pitiably turning his back on age-long processes and conventions and resorting to self-help – the very hallmark of a Hobbesian State! His sole obsession is seeking to stop Biden from being sworn in at any cost!

“No man can tame a tiger into a kitten by stroking it,” averred 32nd US President Franklin Roosevelt. “There can be no appeasement with ruthlessness. There can be no reasoning with an incendiary bomb” – which is what Trump has become. If Biden fails to very proactively checkmate his bullying antics, a vengeful and ruthless Trump won’t hesitate for a moment to – very much like the biblical Samson – bring down the roof on all his perceived enemies who ‘conspired’ to deny him a second term, including the ravaging Coronavirus pandemic, Democrats, erstwhile GOP allies such as Georgia’s Governor Brian Kemp and Republican Secretaries of State in the swing states who certified Biden’s wins, among many others!

According to him, many were happy when they were kidnapped but are clearly not happy seeing them secured by the arm forces.

Ahmad on Twitter, made the allegation as he also described the leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau as a “terrible liar, terrorist and murderer”.

“This life, when those boys were kidnapped, some people were clearly happy, and now are also clearly not happy with their rescue. Nigeria will always win, in sha Allah.

That terrorist and murderer Abubakar Shekau is just a terrible liar, though his supporters will definitely disagree and defend him but it’s fact, he is a liar, a terrible one.”

Barcelona Presidential Candidate Joan Laporta Vows to do 'Everything Possible' to Keep Lionel Messi

Barcelona presidential candidate Joan Laporta has pledged to ‘do everything possible’ to ensure Lionel Messi remains at Camp Nou.

Laporta was Barcelona president between 2003 and 2010 and oversaw one of the most successful periods in the club’s history, as well as Messi’s senior debut. He is one of eight men standing to succeed Josep Maria Bartomeu – who resigned in October – in the January elections.

The future of Messi has been one of the major talking points of the election campaign. Barcelona’s talisman handed in a transfer request over the summer but was unable to secure a move elsewhere due to his €700m release clause.

However, the Argentinian’s contract expires in the summer of 2021 and he will be free to formally negotiate with new clubs in January, with Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain both linked.

“I don’t believe he has [made up his mind],” Laporta told the The Guardian. “I think he’ll weigh up all the options. Messi loves Barça, and I think he’ll consider the proposal the new Barcelona president makes him.

“I could see it coming because what most upsets Leo is that they lied to him. He’s told me: ‘You never lied to me; you fulfilled your promises.’

“I could see that his relationship with the directors was getting worse: they made him carry responsibility for everything. He didn’t have to put up with that. If I become president, then I’ll speak to him.

“I can only imagine him in a Barcelona shirt and I’ll do everything possible to ensure he continues. I know Leo and what he’s interested in is winning. The best players see immediately if the team is competitive.”

Laporta added: “It’s not about money, never has been; if it had, he would have taken very different decisions throughout his career. We have work hard to continue that beautiful story: Leo Messi and Barcelona.”
